‘AT A GLANCE GUIDES’ FOR BEGINNERS
RC PlanesIf you fancy trying to fly a Radio Controlled plane, buying the right set up in the first place is essential. You need a plane that will fly almost on its own, which means a high wing ‘trainer’ or perhaps a powered glider. This means the Spitfire or Hawk Jet will have to wait a while until you have mastered the basics. If you have a local RC flying club, they should have an Instructor to help you. There 2 main types of power for aircraft, ELECTRIC and NITRO. Electric powered RC planes have come a long way in recent years and is an inexpensive option. The Kyosho Cessna Minium at around £65 is a new very small indoor flyer which performs far better than it should outside on a calm day!
A step up from that with a wing span of around 1 metre are the Thunder Tiger Super Cub and Kyosho Cub and Kyosho Clipped Wing Cub. These RC planes offer stable flight & good flight times for around £100 - no construction involved..just clip together.
A powered RC ‘glider’ such as the Electrafun or the Stratus 2000S, which are very easy to fly and don’t require power all the time. The use power to gain altitude then can glide around with power off. As the glider gets lower, turn the power on and the glider will gain altitude again. This results in longer flight times and prices start at under £80.
Traditional nitro powered RC planes such as Kyosho Calmato have a larger (1.3 metre) wingspan and are Almost Ready To Fly for £250. With no construction involved just simple assembly - all you will need are a few extras not in the box, such as nitro fuel and batteries. With this this type of RC model plane, joining a club would open the door to (hopefully) good advice, tuition and 3rd party insurance!
Happy Flying!

RC Nitro Car, Buggy, Monster Truck Glow Plugs - What are the differences?
Hot plugs. Enya 3, OS 3, ModelTechnics Quickfire will generally give easy starting & will run cleanlyon richer carb settings. The down side is the filament is thin which means its delicate & will not survive hi revs when using hi % nitro fuel. Hi Revs & 25%+ nitro requires Cold plugs i.e. OS 8, Nova Rossi 6/7, RB 6. These are more critical on bottom end carb settings, but can cope with the high revs.
RC model ‘sports’ engines using 20% nitro could use Nova Rossi 4, Mccoy 5.9.
Short plug life can be a warning that the engine is badly worn & is shortly about to Detonate! Or perhaps the compression is too high. To check: completely remove plug, insert a piece of multi-core solder into the hole so it touches the liner side. Turn the engine by hand which will squash the solder, then remove & measure - it should be between 19 to 21 thou of an Inch. Adjust head shims to achieve this. Take care when doing this so that you don’t push the solder into a port & cut the end OFF.
TIP! Fit a new plug before a competition final so its at its best when its needed most! RC DRIFT CARSDid you know that one of the latest crazes in Japan is RC model DRIFT CARS. Quick to launch their interpretations of the RC Drift Car were Tamiya & HPI. It is possible to do all the tricks the full size cars can do & then some! It is also popular to fit lights so you can use your car on your own driveway at night. Among the wheel & tyre sets available are some from Ansman which SPARK. If you fit drift tyres to your ordinary 4wd Radio Controlled car it may help if you make the front softer & the rear harder. This can be done by changing the damper oil i.e. thin soft, thick hard. Various rates of springs will also do the trick. Have Fun!RC Car, Buggy, Monster Truck etc ENGINES Did you know that all RC model vehicle engines run Anti-Clockwise? So if you are using a hand held starter onto a flywheel, or if you are flicking a propeller, check you are trying to start the engine in the correct direction!!.RC Car, Buggy, Monster Truck etc GEARING Did you know that the performance of an RC model Car, Buggy or Truck can be adjusted to suit the size of the area you are using it in? In a small area, set your RC model up for low gearing/faster acceleration. In a large area, set your RC model up for high gearing. To gear down, use a smaller clutch bell or larger spur or driven gear. To gear up, do the opposite - larger bell ,smaller spur gear. When playing with gearing don’t forget the 5 second rule - an an RC model engine should not be flat out for more than 5 seconds or you may be seeing what a ‘conrod’ looks like sooner than you might think!
